Insurance Programs

The subject of insurance programs is one that is very broad in its applications. You can find state and federal programs as well as city, county, private and religious programs. Some of the most well known programs are the Medicaid and Medicare insurance plans. The first applies to those who meet certain income guidelines and who have no other means of obtaining insurance. The second is available to seniors whether they have other insurance or not. There are also programs for children referred to as CHIP. A great place to find out more about these insurance plans in your state is to access the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) through their website. You can choose your state and find out about the guidelines where you live.

Another common insurance program is the HIPAA (Health Portability and Accountability Act of 1996), of which parts are implemented by the CMS. The CMS handles the HIPAA Health Insurance Reform, which protects health insurance coverage for workers and their families when they change or lose their jobs. They can answer questions about pre-existing conditions and portability of health insurance coverage. They also implement the HIPAA Administrative Simplification, which establishes national standards for electronic health care transactions and national identifiers.
