Insurance License

Each state will have different guidelines and requirements for getting your insurance license. The best place to check is your state's department of insurance to find out what the rules are. Most every state does require you to obtain a license before you begin selling or writing insurance plans and although it can be a pain to have to deal with each state and their individual laws, that is how it all works.

To give you just an example of what one state requires in obtaining insurance licenses we have chosen the state of Utah and their guidelines to highlight in this article. In your research you will see that a lot of the guidelines are the same from state to state with some minimal differences in requirements, testing and fees. Most every employer will require a college degree, even if not mandated by any specific law.

The Utah requirements are:

  • You must be 18 years of age or older
  • You must be a resident of Utah
  • You must take and pass the Utah Licensing examination
  • You may not have any felony convictions or misdemeanors involving breach of trust, forgery, theft or anything fiduciary
  • You must have a Social Security Number
