Independent Insurance Broker

What is the difference between an independent insurance broker and a captive or contract insurance broker? The main difference is an independent broker represents multiple insurance companies whereas the captive broker only represents one. Consumers that work through a broker usually have an advantage during the claims process since the independent broker has a vested interest in keeping their clients happy. Brokers also are very helpful in guiding you to a suitable policy and will know which insurance company will fulfill your needs whereas direct providers can only offer you only one company's plan, their own.

Another advantage of working with independent insurance brokers is that they can help you become aware of less advantageous conditions with one insurance company and then help you move to another company without having to change brokers. You can develop a relationship with a broker that just doesn't seem to work when working with a direct company. This isn't to say that you might not want to buy direct insurance but you should always review all your options to find the best insurance deal and the best customer service.
