Independent Insurance Agent

What is the difference between an independent insurance agent and a captive insurance agent? The main difference is an independent agent represents multiple insurance companies whereas the captive agent only represents one. Consumers that work through an agent usually have an advantage during the claims process since they have a vested interest in keeping their clients happy. Agents also are very helpful in guiding you to a suitable policy and will know which insurance company will fulfill your needs whereas direct providers can only offer you one company's plan, their own.

Another advantage of working with independent insurance agents is that they can help you become aware of less advantageous conditions with one insurance company and then help you move to another company without having to change agents. You can develop a relationship with an agent that just doesn't seem to work when working with a direct company. This isn't to say that you might not want to buy direct insurance but you should always review all your options to find the best insurance deal and the best customer service.
